Q: A sign at the gate states, GATE CLOSES AFTER EACH VEHICLE. What does this mean?

A: When a resident comes to the gate they have several methods to access the community, card, clicker, transponder. All methods work exactly the same so for this explanation we will use the card. When the card is placed on the reader the system reads the number assigned to that card. The system then looks in the database to make sure that number is allowed access to the community. If allowed the system instructs the gate to open. The gate polls the ground loop to see if there is a vehicle at the gate. The ground loop is the large rectangular pattern on the road. The loop serves two purposes, if a vehicle is not on the loop the gate will not open, and when a vehicle is no longer on the loop the gate closes. The loop is the mechanism responsible for making sure the gate does not close on a vehicle. If a vehicle is on the loop the large gate opens, once fully opened the gate tells the arm to raise. Once there is no vehicle detected on the loop the arm lowers and the gate closes. The system clears all memory and is ready for the next resident.

All of this seems pretty simple until someone tries to tailgate or does not let the first transaction complete before putting their card on the reader or clicking their clicker, etc. When this happens the system just ignores the new card number so the resident thinks the system is broke because it did not read their card, when in fact the system is working perfectly.

"How can I help?" Glad you asked. Allow the resident in front of you to completely enter the community before you try to gain access. You will know the system is ready for you when the gate arm starts to come down.
